Protect Your Active Kids from MRSA

With fall sports in full swing, equipment cleanliness and item-sharing on and off the field may get overlooked between carpools, homework and bedtime.  But, skin infections like MRSA  (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), a potentially life threatening antibiotic resistant Staph infection, are the cause of 56 percent of all infectious disease outbreaks in competitive sports in the U.S.

Skin infections like those caused by MRSA, which spread through contact with equipment and other shared items, are the cause of 56% of all outbreaks of infectious diseases in competitive
sports in the U.S. It’s important that as parents and coaches we do our part to help prevent the spread of MRSA.  You can begin by getting involved in the Equip them Well program through three simple steps – collect, disinfect, donate.

Did you know that athletes who play close-contact sports, such as wrestling and football, are at an increased risk of contracting and spreading MRSA. In fact, MRSA infection rates are higher among football players than among other athletes. A total of 517 out of every 100,000 football players contracted MRSA from 2003 to 2005 as opposed to the overall national rate of 32 per 100,000 people.

I found out about the Equip Them Well campaign through the
One2One Network which I am a member of (their button is in my right side bar). By writing this post, not only am I helping spread the word about something I think needs more attention, but I am also entered to win a giftcard.
